Home Project: Guest Bedroom

Sorry it's taken such a long time to get this post up. I wanted to wait until it was completely finished but we're having a hard time finding the curtains we want so just picture them up when you see the pictures of the room!
When I arrived in August, the room we envisioned as the guest bedroom was basically being used as a 'junk' room. We both just threw everything in there that didn't already have a place to go.
The above picture was taken looking left from the doorway.
It's kind of hard to tell, but two of the walls were light blue, and the other two were a slightly darker blue. There was also some kind of 'speckled' blue around the window edges that hadn't been painted at the same time as the rest of the walls. You can also probably see the Tinkerbell decals; they weren't too difficult to remove.
This one was taken looking directly ahead from the door. The other doors on the right open to the wardrobe.

Our first step, after clearing everything out, was to spackle any cracks or divots in the walls, and then sand them down. I used sugar soap solution to wash the walls down, before using painter's tape to mark the edges of the walls. Paul also removed all of the outlet and light switch covers.

We picked two paint colours for the room - Hematite, a dark grey which would go on the wall that faces you as you walk into the room, and City Storm, a lighter grey that would go on the other walls.
We started off the the light grey, which came out darker than I had expected, but still looks good in the end result.

Paul does the edges for me because I hate it!
Don't you think it looks lighter in the can?

We did two coats of the City Storm colour and let it dry before moving on to the dark grey. However, we learnt our first lesson: remove the painter's tape early. We left ours on for too long so that when we took it off, half the paint came off too. :(

After some light sanding and touch ups we could finally move on to the last wall, and then finish off the painting by brightening up the edges and doors with some fresh white.

Just to show the difference with the two paint colours.

We bought a double bed and mattress from our friend Grant, who was moving to New York. Melissa and Lockie had bought us a comforter set from our wedding registry so the bed was all ready to be set up.

Next to be added to the room were the bedside tables and lamps we'd bought from Ikea.

We had been looking for a nice black and white print to put above the bed and found a bargain at Target of all places! Three for $30.

We then brought in Paul's old dresser, and a mirror.

The blinds we had up were left behind by the previous owner and were all torn up and ratty. I was so happy to see them go, replaced by pretty new plantation blinds.
It's hard to see the damage but they were horrible.

Much prettier!

Apart from the curtains, the other thing left to do is figure out what to do with the fan. Paul thinks we can flip the paddles over (they're not painted on the top side).

So, what do you think?

Picture of the Day (Day 150 - 21st February 2011)

Apparently we have a beaver in our backyard working hard to cut down our trees!

Picture of the Day (Day 149 - 20th February 2011)

To celebrate Dad H's birthday, we all went out to dinner at Olive Garden, followed by an 8-layer cake at home, courtesy of Libby.

Picture of the Day (Day 148 - 19th February 2011)

Today we experienced Roller Derby!
It wasn't as violent as I was expecting, and it took us a little while to understand what was actually going on, but it was great fun. The crowd was really getting into it.
The photo is of the first match between two local Raleigh teams - the Debutante Brawlers and the Trauma Queens. The second match, between the Carolina All-Stars and the DC All-Stars, was a lot quicker and rougher.

Picture of the Day (Day 147 - 18th February 2011)

It is such a nice day today - 25 degrees Celsius! - that I have been sitting under the arbor reading, with my legs in the sun, trying to get an early start on a tan. Bring on summer!

Picture of the Day (Day 146 - 17th February 2011)

Callie came over today and we made S'Mores over the firepit. Yummy!

Picture of the Day (Day 145 - 16th February 2011)

Milo in a can!
I'm kind of scared to try it....

Our last day in Colorado :(
We had to be out of our house by 10am, but our flight wasn't until 5 in the evening, so we made a few stops on our way back to Denver.
Our first was in Frisco, to check out a consignment shop for cheap ski gear. Paul found a few bargains including a new bag for his ski boots.
Next stop was Buffalo Bill's gravesite. I'm not too well-versed in the story of Buffalo Bill but I had heard of him, and knew he was quite a big figure in the 'Wild West'. His grave is atop Lookout Mountain, which has a huge view of Denver and the Colorado Plains.
Lastly, we visited Red Rocks Ampitheatre (above, with Denver in the background). It's a cool venue, and I'd like to one day see a show there.

Picture of the Day (Day 143 - 14th February 2011)

Paul got up early to get me some Valentines from town. :)
And then that was about all I saw of him all day!
Alesha, Callie and I went to Vail for the morning to see the village there (also cute, but I liked Breckenridge better), then I spent the afternoon lazing around the house, playing games and packing, while Paul made the most of his last day skiing.

Picture of the Day (Day 142 - 13th February 2011)

We tried out snowmobiling which was lots of fun! We went up to the top of one of the peaks which had more amazing views.
There were a few steep bits on the way back down but that just made it more fun.
We also spent some time exploring the town in Breckenridge. It's really small but very cute and it reminds me of Santa's village.
We had a big group dinner out with everyone at a tiny Mexican place where the bartender was a crazy guy who looked like Frank Zappa who insulted me for being Aussie but then gave me a double vodka instead of a single so I forgave him.

Picture of the Day (Day 141 - 12th February 2011)

My first time sledding and I absolutely loved it!
This is the view from the top of the sledding hill that was a few blocks from where we were staying.

Picture of the Day (Day 140 - 11th February 2011)

Our first full day in Breckenridge.
I discovered just how terrible I am at snowboarding!!!

Picture of the Day (Day 139 - 10th February 2011)

Our flight to Denver left at 9am, and with the time change we arrived out west at 11am. We picked up the rental cars and stopped for some lunch before beginning the amazing drive through the Colorado Rockies to Breckenridge. The views were absolutely breathtaking.

Picture of the Day (Day 138 - 9th February 2011)

We had very little food in the house because of our trip to Colorado the next day, so we went to Tyler's Tap Room in Durham for dinner and drinks.
Every Wednesday they have a special which comes with its own glass to keep. Purple Haze is a raspberry infused beer, but I can't taste any raspberries. It came in a cool glass though!

Picture of the Day (Day 137 - 8th February 2011)

Packing has begun for Colorado. I'm ready for you, Snow!

Picture of the Day (Day 136 - 7th February 2011)

Mmmmm chocolate mousse gateaux at Tra'Li

Picture of the Day (Day 135 - 6th February 2011)

My first Superbowl Sunday!
The best bits? The food, and Heather's reaction to Usher appearing in the half-time show.
The worst bits? Fergie butchering Sweet Child O' Mine, the football, and the commercials. What a let down. I thought Superbowl commercials were supposed to be awesome?
Here's what you call an awesome ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvfD9-SUeZA

Picture of the Day (Day 134 - 5th February 2011)

I have been wanting to see The King's Speech since I first heard about it. Today, Leigh and I saw it at Southpoint and it did not disappoint.
I don't want to talk it up too much because whenever that happens, it's always a let down when you do get to see the movie. But screw that, this movie is AMAZING!
It is definitely one of my all-time favourites.
I knew Colin Firth would be great but Helena Bonham-Carter blew me away with her performance as the Queen Mother.
It is incredibly funny, but it also made me cry. It's just wonderful.

Picture of the Day (Day 133 - 4th February 2011)

Tonight Alesha invited me to a fundraiser for a Triangle-based Aussie Rules football team, held at Natty Greene's in downtown Raleigh.
It was good to hear some Australian accents again!
We had some fun times 'stealing' this awesome stubby holder from Alesha's friend.

Picture of the Day (Day 132 - 3rd February 2011)

Does Harry Potter ever get less exciting? It's probably my 10th time reading it and I still can't put it down!

Picture of the Day (Day 131 - 2nd February 2011)

Another lovely day today had me reading outside, listening to squirrels chasing each other high up in the trees (but, alas, no more sightings).
This is the creek behind our house which was being surprisingly noisy compared to how still it looked.

Picture of the Day (Day 130 - 1st February 2011)

I spotted this little guy from our kitchen window. I love squirrels!

Picture of the Day (Day 129 - 31st January 2011)

It had come to the end of the day and I had forgotten to take any photos - oops!
So this is tonight's trivia group, albeit, a bit smaller than usual, at our normal table.
